CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Clementine
Age: 13
Canon: The Walking Dead (Telltale Games)
Canon Point: Season 3, episode 2
Character Information: Walking Dead Wiki. The version of Clementine I'll be playing comes from a playthrough where the following choices were made: Lee chose to save Doug over Carley. Clementine shot Lee in order to keep him from turning, chose to help Nick instead of Pete, watched as Carver's face was bashed in, chopped Sarita's arm off, attempted to help Luke before he drowned, and shot Kenny before he could kill Jane, traveling with her to Howe's Hardware and later letting in a pleading family. Choosing this path means she has a tattoo of the letters AJ (for Alvin Jr.) on her right hand as opposed to the scar on her temple or missing ring finger that are results of the other two choices (going with Kenny or going alone).
Personality: While Clem started out as a sweet and innocent child at the beginning of the series, the events of a zombie apocalypse have since hardened her considerably. She's survived in this world for five years, often on her own, and more than once having to put down her own friends and caretakers to keep them from being zombies themselves. She's seen some shit and it shows. Violence is still hard to watch, but it isn't new to her. She isn't going to turn away and vomit at the first sign of an open wound.
She's slower to trust and make attachments now. If there's anything that living in a world of zombies has taught her it's that sometimes other living humans are worse than the walking dead. The fact that she's young doesn't often do her any favors, as too many are only looking out for themselves and a child can be considered a burden. Even though there are some willing to lend her a hand she ends up losing so many of them that it hardly seems worth it to be attached to anyone anymore as it only ends in pain. And, sadly, more than one person gave up their lives in her defense or in the defense of someone close to her. Doug took a bullet in Ben's place. Lee went on as long as he could after he was bitten to make sure she was safe. Kenny tried to kill Jane because he believed she'd lost the baby in their care. For a lot of this time, Clementine simply wasn't physically strong enough to do anything besides pull a trigger. When Luke fell through the ice and sunk to the bottom of the frozen lake there wasn't anything she could do. She'll never know if there was anything she could have done to talk Jane out of hanging herself once she'd realized she was pregnant as Jane didn't give her the opportunity. Attachments have just led to loss and she wants no more of that.
Though having said all this, she can still see the benefit of making allies for the sake of survival, even if she doesn't care much for it. Whenever she's with others, she won't hold back when it comes to expressing her opinions and will be quick to take charge if the rest of the group is hesitating. Company might be trouble, but it can also be a lot safer than being alone.
She's had to mature quickly. Traveling companions were already looking to her to make choices now and again when she was only eleven. Because she's small she can get around places easily where others would have difficulty. Someone being older than her no longer gives them the same power that it once did. As well as she's been able to survive so far she's now an equal to them and will typically be treated as such, with all the positives and negatives that come along with that. A benefit of dealing with the people she has, if you can even really call it a benefit, is that seeing people at their worst has given her some idea of what motivates them and what drives them to it. She doesn't tremble in fear in front of a captor as that fear will get her nowhere.
Clementine has killed other people. Her death count doesn't only include zombies or those who were about to become zombies. Fellow humans have threatened her livelihood and been dispatched because of it. There are plenty who wouldn't spare her because she's young and in return she's willing to put a bullet in their head if they're a danger to her or those she's with. That's unfortunately how her world works now.
Despite all this, she is still a thirteen year old girl and there are times when this is very apparent. There are many aspects of an adult life that she's yet to be introduced to. She can curse like a sailor but otherwise doesn't yet engage in certain activities someone else her age might be itching to try. If you question her on the subject of sex she won't have much to say and the resulting answers will remind anyone just how old she is. Below the battle hardened surface there's still an element of innocence left.
Most of her skills are focused on survival. She can fire a gun, drive a car or truck, and can generally do a lot with very little. Aside from that she hasn't had much of a chance to do anything fun. When she was younger she enjoyed drawing but she might not have any interest in that now. Games are for children and she simply hasn't had the opportunity or desire to become that complacent. Adjusting to a new environment will be difficult.
A drawback of taking Clementine from the point I've chosen to (simply because the other chapters aren't yet available at this point in time) is that not all of what happened between seasons two and three have been revealed to the player yet. We've gotten a couple flashbacks and some commentary from the character and that's it. We know that she was briefly a member of the New Frontier but as you're given an option to decline an invitation in a flashback while playing as her we don't know how she ended up being forced into that situation. Being alone and having nothing, it would have looked like a good idea at the time for herself and the baby in her care. Also having seen some of the members we know that at first glance it might look like those running it have their heads on straight. We're given enough for her to be playable, as details of that likely won't need to me mentioned much in a roleplay situation and can be introduced if necessary when further chapters with flashbacks are released.
